SURF AND SAND RESORT

One of the few California resorts directly on the beach, the Surf and Sand Resort is a series of blufftop vernacular buildings built over 70 years. The project redesign transformed a valuable and neglected ocean bluff within the Coastal Zone from a series of underutilized beach-access ramps into a terrace for parties and weddings with spectacular sunsets and views of Catalina Island. In addition, the 3-level design provides stair and pedestrian bridge connection linking previously isolated guest rooms along the coastal bluff to the hotel lobby. A custom fabricated glass windscreen was designed without a frame to enhance the views.
