US NAVY BAND PARK

WHITIN DESIGN WORKS was commissioned to provide design services for the US Navy to create an open space and park for Naval band practices and event gatherings. The proposed site consisted of an existing building, to be demolished, and underutilized open space and parking lot. A short fused project, WHITIN DESIGN WORKS worked directly with the Design Build Architectural firm and Civil Engineer to assess critical site issues and move directly into Design Development and Construction Documentation.
Working with program requirements to provide more functional open space for marching band operations along with passive and play gathering spaces for families, WHITIN DESIGN WORKS consolidated redundant walkways to create a large open space while salvaging existing play and shade structures. Roughly half of the existing trees were incorporated into the new landscape design with new drought tolerant shrubs and groundcovers. To assist in water reduction, synthetic turf was utilized on this project which will also reduce maintenance care and costs.
Completing the design phase and approvals in 3 months, Construction Administration followed without delay. Being sensitive to the project budget, WHITIN DESIGN WORKS conducted Construction Administration services through close coordination with the Civil Engineer and Architectural Team on site through conference calls, shared site photography, and sketches for a seamless and successful project completion in Summer 2012.
