The Schematic Design for the Yueda Time Mall in the Jingan district of Shanghai provides urban social spaces on 3 levels - basement, street level and roof deck - all uncovered to the open air. Circular openings in the street level deck and roof canopy inspired the rain drop paving, fountains and planting patterns. Metal tree sculptures, gravel and artificial grass are used in combination with live plant material to create a garden environment in areas with structural limitations. The 3-hectare roof deck is designed as an outdoor garden and as a viewing garden in inaccessible ares. Design alternatives explore patterned landscapes constructed of non-living materials and colored metal shade structures to simulate a live landscape. The 88,700 square meter project caters to the work/play lifestyle of this new economic center.
