RADITATION THERAPY BUILDING
Kaiser Permanente Anaheim Medical Campus
Anaheim, California

WHITIN DESIGN WORKS joined Perkins +Will in an invited design competition to create a new “iconic” Radiation Oncology Building to build out Kaiser’s 27 acre campus in Anaheim. The building site is the 100% corner on the entry drive into the recently completed Kaiser Hospital, HSB, MOB and 2 acre Healing Garden. Kaiser’s design criteria included adherence to the Kaiser EcoToolKit, the Green Standards and stringent cost controls.

WHITIN DESIGN WORKS and Perkins + Will engaged in design charettes centered on the principle of creating comfort in a place of discomfort. The design concept is an economic box building wrapped within an undulating skin of ipe wood. The organic wood skin cools the building, provides filtered lighting and privacy for treatment rooms and trelliage for the outdoor courtyards. Recognizing the role that views of nature play in the healing process, the floor plan integrates views of landscape in every room taking advantage of the narrow side yard space on a constricted site. In addition to passive viewing spaces, courtyards at the building entrance and a Green Roof terrace provide outdoor spaces for individuals and groups.
